Toxins are “residue” that accumulates in our digestive system. This residue stagnates, ferments and may cause diseases. So detoxifying your body at regular intervals is a great idea all year round.

Teas to Detoxify Your Body in Winter

If you have allergies, have low blood pressure, or if you are pregnant, consult your doctor before drinking these teas. Try a new tea every 2 or 3 days. It is not advisable to drink all the teas in one single day.

Cinnamon and clove tea


  • Ginger (a small piece)
  • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
  • Licorice
  • Hot water
  • 2 Cloves


Crush the cloves, ginger in a mortar and add it to the boiling water in a teapot. Then let it sit for a few minutes and add the cinnamon and simmer the mixture for a minute. Let the teapot sit and drink the tea. You can have 1 or 2 cups a day after meals.

Turmeric and pepper tea


  • 1/4 tsp of turmeric
  • 4 grains of black pepper
  • 1 small sprig of holy basil
  • 1 cardamom


Add the ingredients to a cup of boiling water and let it infuse for 5 minutes. If you want, you can add honey. Drink this tea at bedtime.

  • Hibiscus flowers and water


Get 4 hibiscus flowers and remove the petals. Put the petals in a pan with the water and boil the mixture for 5 minutes. Switch it off and let it infuse for 5 minutes. Drink the tea once a day.

Ginger and apple cider vinegar tea


  • Ginger (a small piece)
  • 2 cloves
  • A pinch of cinnamon
  • 1tsp of apple cider vinegar


In a pan, boil some water with the ingredients (except the apple cider vinegar). Let it infuse for a while and add the apple cider vinegar and honey once it cools down.

Orange peel tea


  • One orange
  • Ginger (a small piece)
  • Honey
  • A pinch of cinnamon


Chop orange slices and remove the seeds. Add all the ingredients to a teapot with boiling water. Boil it for some minutes and then switch it off. Let it infuse for a few minutes and drink the tea with honey if you want.

Orange peel is rich in fiber, vitamin C, folate, calcium, vitamin B&, among other nutrients. It has anticancer properties polyphenols, which help prevent chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, obesity, and Alzheimer’s.

Detoxifying with Winter Foods

If you want to include other foods that help you cleanse your body during the winter, here are a few tips:

  • Consume farm-raised eggs,
  • Say yes to warming spices, like ginger, garlic, cinnamon, and pepper.
  • If you are a meat-eater, go for grass-fed ones,
  • Consume a lot of homemade soup: try cooked root veggies, and greens like kale and collards, winter squash (avoid canned soups since they contain a lot of salt),
  • In the winter you need more calories and energy, this doesn’t mean you should eat fewer vegetables. A great option is root vegetables, like beets.
